This one's for you, mother nature
There has been a lot of scary news about the environment recently. Wildfires in Greece and Italy and soaring temperatures across the rest of Europe have gotten most of us a little stressed when it comes to the climate crisis.
That's why when huge companies make moves to improve their impact on the planet, it's a big deal.
This week, Lidl has announced that it'll be making its entire own brand tea bag range 100% plant-based and compostable.
Lidl says it's a move that will save up to 800 million tea bags from ending up in traditional waste bins, and subsequently landfill.
The new tea bags will be made from a plant-based plastic, polylactic acid (PLA). The new material will make the tea bags completely compostable without changing the taste of the tea.
Shyam Unarket, Head of Responsible Sourcing and Ethical Trade at Lidl GB, commented: “those buying tea bags from Lidl are supporting our efforts to reduce single-use plastic going to landfill. We understand that even a few small changes to our products can benefit our customers, while helping us improve our impact on the planet – one cup at a time.”
The tea bags will be landing in Lidl stores in the coming months, replacing existing stock as it is sold.
The move is part of Lidl's commitment to reduce its own-label plastic packaging by 40% by the end of 2025, and comes after the supermarket announced it would be the first UK supermarket to incorporate Prevented Ocean Plastic into its water bottles.
